New MXGP Calendar Announced: Herlings Resume Season in August | Right away
The new season calendar in MXGP, the highest class in motocross, was announced on Tuesday. Jeffrey Herlings will be back in action in August, while two Grands Prix has been cancelled.
The MXGP season began on March 1 with the British Grand Prix and a week later was also raced in Valkenswaard, but the following races could not be continued due to the coronavirus.
The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) originally wanted to start the season in July, but this is partly due to travel restrictions that are still too early. The Russian Grand Prix was postponed from 4 to 5 July to 1 and 2 August, and the Latvian Grand Prix was also postponed by one month (from 11 to 12 July to 8-9 August).
Because of these shifts, it is logically necessary to push back with other Grands Prix, which were originally planned in July. Due to all the mutations, the Grand Prix in Maggiora, Italy, and the Grand Prix in St. Jean d’Angély, France, will not be able to take place at all this year.
After two Grands Prix, Herlings leads the World Cup standings with 94 points. Closely followed by Dutchman Tim Gajser, followed by Italian Antonio Cairoli. Glenn Coldenhoff is number six.
