Half of Dutch people have moved enough in the past year, especially older people who have more | Right away
More than half of Dutch people aged four and over have moved sufficiently in 2019, figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics showed on Thursday.Cbs). In addition, twice as many older people moved last year than almost twenty years ago.
The figures come from the Health Survey/Lifestyle Monitor 2019 cbs, which was prepared by the Statistical Office in cooperation with the National Institute of Public Health and environment (RIVM).
According to the guidelines of the Health Council, adults must be moderately intensive for at least 2.5 hours per week, e.g. on foot or by bicycle. Children must exercise for at least one hour a day. Young people between the ages of 12 and 18 and people aged 65 and over are the least likely to move, according to cbs.
Last year, 54% of Dutch people were sufficiently intensive. The same proportion was sported weekly. Of the over-65s, 35 percent exercise at least once a week.
Although relatively few adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 meet the practice guidelines (41 percent), this is the age group with the highest proportion of athletes who exercise weekly (71 percent).
Majority does enough muscle and bone strength
In addition to moderately intense sports, the health council advises on muscle and bone strengths such as strength training and intensive sports. In this way, the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depressive symptoms can be reduced. The risk of broken bones is also lower in the elderly.
In 2019, 82% of Dutch people aged four and over have sufficient muscle and bone strength. Almost all four- to twelve-year-olds met the standard (99.8 percent), but 75 percent of those over 65 met.
Older people are moving twice as much as almost 20 years ago
Last year, twice as many older people moved than almost 20 years ago. In 2001, 22 percent of over-65s met the practice guidelines, compared to 40 percent in 2019.
More 18- to 65-year-olds have also started to move around sufficiently since then. In 2001, 44 percent adhered to the guidelines, compared to 52 percent last year.
Nearly three-quarters (74 percent) of people who exercise weekly, subscribe to a gym or are members of a sports club.
