Feyenoord finally prevailed with Mark Diemers on Friday. The Rotterdam team will take over the midfielder from Fortuna Sittard.
Diemers signs a three-year contract with Feyenoord until mid-2023. He had a one-year engagement with Fortuna. Neither club will announce the amount of the transfer fee, but is said to be worth more than a million euros.
Feyenoord trumps FC Groningen in the battle for Diemers. The Groninger had already verbally agreed with Fortuna and Diemers at an earlier point, but he decided to take into account feyenoord’s interest when they competed for him and no longer went to the table with FC Groningen.
‘I didn’t think about it two or three years ago. The fact that a nice club like Feyenoord will come for me makes me proud. I was here last week for a meeting with the coaches. That was very nice. I’m going to have to work hard for my place, but I’m going to do my best,” Diemers said Website Feyenoord.
Lawyer: “He made an excellent impression on me”
Feyenoord sees Diemers as an ideal reinforcement for the midfield. Renato Tapia and Oguzhan Özyakup have already left, and that can also happen with Leroy Fer and Orkun Kökü, which can cause problems for coach Dick Advocaat in this line.
“He impressed me very well in the three games last season against Fortuna Sittard. From the other games I’ve seen from him, it’s clear that he has the qualities we can use well at Feyenoord,” Advocaat said.
Diemers is the first purchase of Feyenoord for next season. The number three Eredivisie recently arrived at the arrival of transfer-free striker Bryan Linssen from Vitesse, who has suspended negotiations after what he considers a poor first offer.
The 27-year-old Diemers has been playing for Fortuna since the summer of 2018. The former youth international scored 16 goals in 67 official games and provided 17 assists. In the past he was also active for De Graafschap, SC Cambuur and FC Utrecht.
