Candles in the vineyard: Belgian domain saves harvest from night frost – Culinary

We may have had a few sunny days, which doesn’t mean it can’t get bitterly cold at night. This can be fatal for the grape harvest, but the valke Vleug winery does not simply let it happen. Your fight against the cold provides beautiful pictures.

Partly due to global warming, wine production is increasing and our parts are becoming more and more suitable for growing grapes. However, it remains a cooler climate that produces wine that is more sensitive, lighter and more refined than that of warmer climates. Benefits enough to start in Belgium, but there are also some risks involved.

One of them is cold nights. A temperature below two degrees below zero permanently damages the buds of a grape plant. If this happens, there will be no vineshoots and no grapes without shoots this year. At the moment, the grape boot is nipped in the bud and “this is a very vulnerable time for all fruit growers,” says Pieter Raeymaekers, winemaker at Valke Vleug.

Work on the Valke Vleug vineyard will continue, provided the necessary social disintegration. On Tuesday, the three-year-old vineyard team was preparing to fight the possible frost of the next night. Every five meters large candles were placed between the tendrils, which can increase the ground temperature by one and a half degrees. This resulted in 450 candles, all of which had to be lit separately in the middle of the night.

The action is a budget line through the bill for the small wine domain, but it produces beautiful pictures. ‘We hope this was enough to protect the buttons and it will stay this time this season. Let’s look ahead and let’s rely on a beautiful spring and summer,” says winemaker Pieter Raeymaekers and his team.
