Australia gives King Leopold Mountains new name – Travel

Known as the King Leopold Mountains, the mountain range is named Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges after 131 years, the Western Australia government announced today.

The mountain range is located in the Kimberly region of northwestern Australia. The new name comes in consultation with Aboriginal people in the region. There they wanted to get rid of the name of the “evil tyrant” after the Black Lives Matter protests in June. The King Leopold Mountains cross the territory of the Aborigines, who designate the nature reserve in their own way. The new name is a combination of the name used by Ngarinyin and Bunuba.

No connection to Leopold II.

Explorer Alexander Forrest basked the mountains after the then king because of Leopold’s “keen interest in expeditions”, immediately his only connection to the mountains. In Western Australia, however, it refers more to European monarchs with a desire for expansion, such as the Oscar-ranked Swedish-Norwegian king and the Bonaparte archipelago off the coast.
