All about dandruff: ‘The wrong shampoo accelerates dandruff’ | Right away

Hey, it’s snowing on your shoulders! What’s next? If you google for information about dandruff you will find some answers to your questions, but not at all. How exactly does dandruff come about and what do you do about it? We ask Dylan Kok, trichologist (specialist in hair diseases and abnormalities), who works in the hair clinic.

What is Rose?

“Dandruff is an excess of yeast on the scalp. It can be mixed with dander in a dry, powdery form and in a sticky form, with the yeast sticking to the scalp.”

How does Rose come about?

“It has everything to do with the condition of the scalp. There is a protective layer on the scalp. This layer can disappear by using incorrect shampoos. When the layer is gone, irritations are more likely to occur. It starts with a red, dry scalp and increased sebum production. This sebum production causes a yeast attack.”

So dandruff comes from wrong shampoo?

“True, chemical shampoos can dry out and affect the scalp. But: Some people who wash with these shampoos suffer from nothing. This is because one has a better scalp than the other and has no predisposition to irritation and dandruff. Someone who has no predisposition to do so can also suffer from dandruff due to the wrong care.”

“Chemical ingredients in shampoos wash away the protective layer of the scalp.”

“The worst ingredient in chemical shampoos is sodium lauryl sulfate. This soap solution provides a lot of foam, but it makes your hair way too clean and blackens the protective layer away. In addition, many shampoos have too high pH. The scalp has a pH of 5, many shampoos of 7 or higher. It bothers the skin.”

Where does a good shampoo meet?

“Then come to shampoos with natural ingredients. The most important thing is that there are no sulfates and parabens in the shampoo and that the pH is 5 or lower.”

Are there other factors that stimulate dandruff formation?

“If your skin is already irritated, the stress hormone cortysol can speed up the process of dandruff formation. This doesn’t happen right away, but about six weeks after you’ve experienced a lot of stress. Heating air can also accelerate irritation due to dehydration of the scalp.”

What’s the best way to deal with your rose?

“If you have the powdered form of dandruff, you don’t need to buy an anti-dandruff shampoo right away. Find a good natural shampoo and wash your hair every other day. If that doesn’t help, choose a not too intense, natural anti-dandruff shampoo.”

“If you have the sticky variant of dandruff, you should use an anti-rose shampoo with a fungus or bacteria-killing ingredient, such as ketaconazole. Stop it once the dandruff is gone and then switch to a good, natural shampoo.”

What happens if your rose doesn’t work?

“Then eczema can occur and possibly even psoriasis, the known dandruff disease, although that depends on your genes. Therefore, it is important that you do not leave rose for too long.”

Will Rose come back sooner if you already have?

“No, the scalp is resilient. So if they keep taking good care of it, it’s not going to come back.’

Is your hair less beautiful with rose?

“No, it can’t cause hair loss or less shine. But these chemical shampoos can affect the hair.”
