Addicted to sunbathing? It’s in your genes – beauty

The tendency to sunbathe is related to genes involved in addiction, behavior, and personality traits. This is shown by British studies with more than 260,000 people.

The researchers took detailed health information from 2,500 twins in the UK, including their love of sunbathing. It was found that identical twins are more likely to have similar sunbathing behavior than non-identical twins, so genetics play an important role.

Addiction and risk behavior

From a further analysis of 260,000 test subjects, the team was able to select five key genes that play a role in the love of sunbathing. Some of these genes have been linked to behavioral traits related to risk behavior and addiction, including tobacco, cannabis, and alcohol use, and sex.

Health campaigns

The scientists suggest that the results have important implications for health campaigns warning people of the dangers of sunbathing.

“Our results suggest that combating overexposure to the sun or using tanning beds may be more difficult than expected,” said Mario Falchi, co-author of the study. “It is important that the general public is aware of this predisposition as it can make people more aware of their behavior and the possible harm of excessive sun exposure.”
